Our History
1908 saw the formation of the Brentwood Bowling Club and thus became the first bowls club in the Brentwood area. Their headquarters was a green behind the Yorkshire Grey public house in the High Street where they remained until 1960 when the pub was closed down.
The next few seasons saw the club having a nomadic existence sharing greens with other Brentwood clubs. Things improved for the 1964 season when the Council agreed to provide a green at King George Playing Field. However, the transition was not easy. Firstly, it was regarded that the proposed season ticket prices were exorbitant and there were practically no facilities. These difficulties were overcome, and the Club moved to its new home in 1964 and Central Essex joined them in 1973.
In 1974 a major move took place when it was agreed to form a ladies’ section. In the early 1980’s the council constructed a second green. Then in 1985 the members of Brentwood and Central Essex contributed to the building of a clubhouse.
From a competitive point of view the Club has had limited success. The club has won a number of local league titles and members have won local competitions. However, in County competitions it is necessary to go back to 1911 when Arthur Hazell won the County Singles although they came close again when Richard Rose was runner up in the County Benevolent Cup in 2006.
