“SURPRISE” PRESENTATION FOR JAMES NOLAN!

CLUB stalwart James Nolan received a surprise but well-deserved presentation as the first Short Mat Bowls season drew to a close at the clubhouse in mid-April.

Short Mat Bowls was introduced on Tuesday and Thursday mornings last October and proved an instant success.

James sourced the mat required which was then purchased by the club and he also organised the twice-weekly games for an enthusiastic number of participants.

The members decided to have a collection for James and club chairperson Hilary Roberts, who played regularly, was on hand to present James with a trophy and two good bottles of red wine – one of James’ favourite tipples!

Hilary said: “James did a great job and I know that everyone who played Short Mat Bowls was very grateful for all the hard work he put in.

“Short Mat Bowls will certainly be repeated when the outdoor season comes to a close as it proved a great way to play bowls and also keep in touch and socialise with other members.
Thanks James and everyone is looking forward to getting together again in October.”

James said: “I couldn’t believe it when I collected the trophy and the wine – it was a massive surprise. I must thank all the members who supported our first
season because without them we would never have got Short Mat Bowls up and running. We will certainly be back in action in October.”

BRENTWOOD BOWLERS ENJOY EXPERT COACHING ROADSHOW!

BRENTWOOD Bowling Club members have enjoyed a highly-successful Coaching Roadshow with the expert team from the Essex Bowls Coaches Association (ECBA).

The all-day Roadshow, under the watchful eye of Essex County coach Trevor Plank and his six qualified assistants, was attended by 35 enthusiastic club members at their headquarters in King George’s Playing Fields in Brentwood on Saturday, May 3rd.

The members, ranging from complete beginners to players of County standard, received coaching in delivery and stance, tactics, warm-up exercises and types of group and solo practice.

The event was organised by Peter Smith, the Brentwood BC qualified coach, who said: “It was a great day and I must thank Trevor and his team for making the experience so instructional and entertaining. I am sure our members benefitted greatly from the expert advice they received.”

The ECBA is part of the Essex County Bowls Association and they arrange Roadshows all over Essex for clubs who wish to take part (essexbowlscoaching@gmail.com)
